Abstract
The similarities and differences between specifications and fabrication techniques for optical glass and for ir materials are discussed. A general familiarity with this subject as applied to the visible region is assumed. Of the many materials known to transmit ir radiation, a group of nine is selected for emphasis; reasons are given for this selection, and specific comments made on each material. Those suggested for general use are germanium, silicon, arsenic trisulfide, KRS-5, Irtran-2 and -4, and for restricted uses strontium titanate, Irtran-1, and indium antimonide.
