Recent changes in federal and state social policies, along with substantial reductions in funding, provide new challenges for agency administrators and practitioners. This article discusses the lessons learned from the cutbacks, the recent findings on cutback management in the human service field, and the implications for the future survival of social service agencies. It also devotes special attention to the new roles required of agency administrators in the face of reductions.
