Brief Communication: A Model System for Studies of Colon Carcinogenesis: Tumor Induction by a Single Injection of Methylazoxymethanol Acetate 2

Abstract

A single administration of methylazoxymethanol acetate to rats induced tumors of the colon. The tumors had properties similar to those found in man; some were benign adenomatous polyps or adenomatous polyps with focal areas of carcinoma; others were polypoid adenocarcinomas. The incidence of tumors in the colon was greater than that in the small intestine. This system allows the study and description of sequential changes in colon tissue exposed to carcinogen for a brief period of time.
