Abstract
This is a discussion of the role of fungi in symbiosis with roots (mycorrhiza), as observed primarily in the Amazon rain forest. This lush jungle lives on very poor leached soils, and is able to persist because the mycorrhizal fungi recycle the nutrients from the forest litter into the tree roots. Keywords
