Abstract
The fractures most commonly associated with osteoporosis occur in the vertebrae, hip, and distal forearm. Of these, hip fractures have by far the most severe consequences. In 1985, about 247,000 hip fractures occurred among persons over age 45 in the United States.1 Of those who live to the age of 90, an estimated one third of women and one sixth of men will have a hip fracture.2 Mortality in patients with a hip fracture is 12 to 20 percent higher than in other persons of similar age and the same sex, although some of this excess mortality may be attributable . . .
