Risk of Injury in Soldiers

Abstract
Preventable injuries cause significant loss of duty time and compromise readiness. Incidence rates, causes, consequences, and types of injuries sustained by active duty soliders at Fort Lewis, Washington, were documented. The overall incidence rate was 81 injuries/100 soldiers/year. Most injuries occurred on duty and the majority of injuries occurred while participating in exercise and sports. Sixty percent of all injured soldiers were unable to return immediately to full duty. Musculoskeletal injuries accounted for the greatest number of disabled soldiers. Risk factors for injury included age, sex, unit of assignment, location of housing, and amount of weekly exercise.
