Abstract
Microalbuminuria (urine albumin excretion rate [AER], 30-300 mg/24 h) is a common diagnosis in the clinical care of patients with type 1 diabetes mellitus, with a lifetime cumulative incidence of 20% to 40%.1-4 Clinical guidelines recommend regular screening for microalbuminuria because it is common, is known to be associated with adverse renal and cardiovascular outcomes, and can be treated with antagonists of the renin-angiotensin-aldosterone system (RAAS).4
