Positions in Multiple Network Systems, Part One: A General Conception of Stratification and Prestige in a System of Actors Cast as a Social Topology

Abstract
Four hypotheses concerning contingencies of the societal reaction are investigated for 5,016 21-64 year-old male first admissions to all state mental hospitals in one state between 1956 and 1965. Results support the status (marital) resource hypothesis of societal reactions as well as the hypothesis that degree of behavioral deviance is a significant contingency. Two other hypotheses, dealing with the interaction effects of status resources and behavioral deviance, also receive support.
