Morphological and anatomical characters and studies on essential oil of fruits obtained from Ooty, India, and identified as Foeniculum vulgare subsp. vulgare have been described and compared with official drug. It is found that Ooty sample contains a high percentage of volatile oil, upto 8.5 %, which is devoid of anethole and contains estragole as the main constituent. Similar to some other umbelliferous fruits, chemical races are reported here to occur in Foeniculum vulgare fruit as well. Eine aus dem Staate Madras stammende Fencheldroge wurde als Foeniculum vulgare subsp. vulgare bestimmt. Sie unterscheidet sich nicht nur morphologisch und anatomisch von der üblichen, sondern auch chemisch. Ihr Gehalt an ätherischem Öl war mit 8,5 % besonders hoch. Während für Fructus Foeniculi ein hoher Anteil von Anethol im Öl charakteristisch ist, enthielt diese Droge als Hauptkomponente Estragol.
