A mechanism of predator-mediated induction of diel vertical migration in Daphnia hyalina

Abstract
Predator avoidance is generally thought to be the most important ultimate reason for diel vertical migration in zooplankton. Combining field observations and experimental results, it is shown, first, that a phototactic reaction to relative changes in light intensity is at the base of a diel vertical migration and, secondly, how this phototaxis is enhanced by a chemical mediated by juvenile perch.
