Premedication for Peroral Endoscopy two Double-Blind Studies

Abstract
The effect of an intramuscular injection of 10 mg of diazepam and of a subcutaneous injection of 2 mg of hydromorphone hydrochloride plus 0.3 mg. of atropine in the premedication for peroral endoscopy was compared with physiological saline in double-blind trials. Only flexible fiberscopes were used. Three-fourths of the 46 patients who received physiological saline alone appeared to be satisfactorily premedicated. Diazepam showed no significant effects, but hydromorphone-atropine showed significant beneficial effects on anxiety, salivation, vomiting, and discomfort.
