GROWTH TWINS IN GERMANIUM

Abstract
The occurrence of growth twins in germanium was investigated as a function of the thermal, constitutional, and crystallographic conditions of solidification; it was found to be very markedly dependent upon these growth conditions. In every case the nucleation of a twin could be traced to a condition of supercooling, either absolute or constitutional, during solidification. A new type of substructure was also observed to form under certain growth conditions.
