Abstract
Wind generation is a source of energy that has a growing importance in some countries. Due to the nondispatchable nature of wind power, under low load and high wind penetration conditions, dangerous situations could be reached. As this level of penetration has not yet come in most countries, new studies need to be performed in order to ascertain a secure dynamic operation. Recent technology tends to easy controllable, variable speed devices that seem to have a better influence than fixed speed devices on power system dynamics. Particularly, doubly fed induction generators have a growing importance in wind technology in Spain. In this paper, an overview of modelling requirements of these systems is presented, together with the influence of grid and windmills parameters on transient stability. A comparison between the behaviour of fixed speed and doubly fed induction generation in Spanish future situation shows the advantages of these variable speed devices.
