Abstract
Low‐energy excited states of chiral phenylallenecarboxylic acids are studied by means of circular dichroism spectroscopy and absorption spectroscopy. Band assignment for eight transitions with energies less than 6.2 eV is achieved using correlations with excited states of phenylallenic hydrocarbons and substituent effects on the circular dichroism. The longest wavelength transitions are magnetically allowed. They are nearly one‐center 2py ⟷ 2pz transitions being localized at the central carbon atom of the allenic moiety and thus resemble n → π* transitions of carbonyl compounds. The circular dichroism spectra reveal an additional π → π* transition contributing to the 5.0 eV (1B1u) absorption region, which corresponds to an excited state correlating with 1E2g(a) in benzenederivatives. Order of magnitude calculations for the rotational strengths of the electrically allowed transitions of 4‐phenyl‐(2, 3)‐butadienoic acid lead to the conclusion that the coupled oscillator mechanism is dominant for the Cotton effects of these transitions, which also determine the optical rotatory dispersion in the transparent region. Keywords
