Hypothermia and the Elderly: Perceptions and Behaviors

Abstract
Interviews with 381 older Americans participating in Area Agency on Aging meal programs across north Florida revealed that only 1 in 10 were aware of the dangers of accidental hypothermia. Many low-income elderly are particularly vulnerable to the cold because of poorly insulated houses, inadequate heat and lack of warm clothing and bedding. Even southern states need initiatives to increase comfort levels and prevent the development of hypothermia.
