Optimization of Steel Plate Girders via General Geometric Programming*

Abstract
An efficient practical procedure is presented for minimum weight design of unstiffened and stiffened steel plate girders subjected to arbitrary loading, using the Generat Geometric Programming (GGP) technique. The nonlinear optimization problem is formulated on the basis of the current (1980) American Institute of Steel Construction (AISC) specification. The procedure is used to solve different types of stiffened and unstiffened plate girders and to perform a parametric study to find the optimum value of span length-to-web depth ratio.
