Abstract
Cu Kα X-rays were used to obtain photoelectron spectra for the K shell of the metal ion in twelve different manganese and iron compounds. Comparison of these spectra with data taken on the 2p shell allows one to deduce that the princpal source of satellite structure seen in the 2p spectra of transition metal compounds of the first row is generally due to electron shake-up rather than multiplet splitting. A discussion is given on various experimental means of distinguishing satellite structure due to multiplet splitting from that due to electron shake-up.
