Abstract
Certain statistical properties of turbulence observed in a boundary layer and in fully developed pipe flow are compared. Differences and likenesses are shown, and in particular certain common properties are found which appear to be indicative of processes governing the finer structure and controlling the origin, form, and life cycle of turbulent motions. An attempt is made to point out some of these processes. Attention is called to a region of high turbulent activity near the wall.
