Recovery of penicillin G from fermentation broth by microfiltration

Abstract
Ceramic membrane in tubular configuration was used to optimize the penicillin G recovery from fermentation broth. A 2.9-fold increase in CFV (cross-flow velocity) resulted in a twofold increase in initial flux as well as a 2.7-fold increase in the final flux; however, the average flux was increased 1.8-fold. This resulted in a 41% reduction of the processing time, whereas the recovery was almost the same. Regeneration of operating fluxes and 98% recovery of penicillin G was obtained over 12 cycles. It was observed that the processing volume, processing time and CFV are critical factors in the recovery of penicillin G from the fermentation broth.
