Henoch-Schoenlein Syndrome: Review of Pathology and Report of Two Cases

Abstract
This paper deals with the clinical and pathologic findings in 2 autopsied patients who had the Henoch-Schoenlein syndrome. In one, the characteristic perivasculitis and vasculitis, with and without hemorrhage, were noted in the skin, lungs, and gastrointestinal tract. In addition, the gastrointestinal tract was the site of fibrinoid necrosis in occasional arterioles, and the kidneys manifested a hemorrhagic glomerulonephritis. No acute vascular lesions were observed in the second patient, chronic glomerulonephritis being complicated by a terminal bronchopneumonia. Previous case reports are reviewed, and the pathogenesis and relation to polyarteritis nodosa are emphasized.
