Abstract
The effect of the magnetic field configuration on the formation of ion acoustic shocks has been investigated experimentally and through numerical solutions of the fluid equations. The tendency for compressive pulses to steepen into shocks is enhanced if the pulses travel into a configuration of converging magnetic field geometry. Keywords
