Abstract
A fundamental chaotic instability in a system of two coupled lasers is investigated both experimentally and theoretically. The amplitude instability and mutual coherence of the light emitted by the lasers is investigated as a function of the detuning and coupling parameters. A quantitative comparison of the intensity fluctuations is made with numerical simulations that include noise in the laser detuning. Keywords
