Abstract
This paper explores the connections between illustrations in a sample of reading primers currently in use in schools and sex differences in reading attainment and reading preferences that are displayed by school children. The findings of an analysis of 1353 reading books are reported together with a discussion of the implications of, and strategies for, working with such materials in schools. Keywords
