A Lucky Strike

Abstract
About 9:30 p. m. on October 16, 1988, lightning struck a lamp pole just 400 feet in front of me. Although I was able to take the picture on this page, the strike was so close and so bright I was momentarily blinded, lost my footing, and slid down a steep concrete embankment. Because close-up photographs of natural lightning that show the strike point are relatively rare, Dr. Krider, a lightning expert, believes this photograph merits close inspection. His analysis and comments follow.
