Abstract
Squid embryos were raised in a simple culture medium of adult squid blood, sea water, and antibiotics, and subjected to various operative treatments. The outer layer of cells of the embryo is quite labile in its fate and control of the differentiation of these cells resided in the undrlying cellular yolk epithelium. This conclusion led to the postulation of a "morphogenetic inductive map" which resides in the yolk epithelium at the time of organ differentiation.
