A method for director alignment of SmC devices

Abstract
A method for obtaining good SmC alignment is introduced. The method uses a high pretilt surface treatment, in which the pretilt angle is of the opposite sign on the two cell surfaces, and in which liquid-crystalline materials are used that possess the I-N+-A-C phase sequence. An advantage of the new method is the ease of obtaining monodomain, substantially defectfree SmC devices. The off-axis light-transmission characteristics are compared to those calculated for several assumed director fields.
