Abstract
Despite the importance of the intraurban location of industrial employment for overall urban spatial structure, there is little understanding of the location process of firms in this sector. The recent completion of several descriptive studies of the shift of manufacturing jobs within a number of metropolitan areas makes this a propitious time for a review of current knowledge. In addition to summarizing the salient patterns uncovered in this body of research, the article indicates the implications for the development of models of the process of intrametropolitan industrial location.
