Validation of a high resolution measurement technique for estimating the parameters of impinging waves in indoor environments

Abstract
A novel wideband channel sounding system operating at 24 GHz with an RF bandwidth of 1 GHz is presented. The SAGE (space- alternating generalized expectation maximization) algorithm is used for obtaining high-resolution estimates of the parameters characterizing the impinging waves, i.e. the delays, incidence azimuths, incidence elevations and complex amplitudes. The Cramer-Rao lower bound (CRLB) provides a benchmark of the mean-squared error (MSE). Monte-Carlo simulations show that the MSE's of the parameter estimates are close to their corre- sponding CRLB's. The reliability of the channel sounder is tested in a predefined scenario consisting of a direct and two reflected waves.
