Abstract
A study was made of the concentration of zinc, copper, manganese and lead in Balanus balanoides taken at different times of the year but at two environmentally similar sites. Zinc occurred in the highest concentrations at all times of the year and at both sites. The highest concentration of all four metals was found at the southerly site. The lowest levels of zinc and copper at the northerly site were found in the summer months, and those of zinc, manganese and lead at the southerly site in March 1973. The distribution of metals at the two sites is discussed in relation to river flow rates and tidal flow, together with phytoplankton productivity. A possible effect on growth and fecundity is discussed.
