Mineral content of shoots of Australian rice crops

Abstract
Samples of whole shoots of rice plants, all collected at the panicle initiation stage of development were analysed by ICP spectrometry. Significantly higher levels of Ca, Mg, K, Na, and Ni, but significantly lower levels of P, Fe, Mn, Zn, and Ti, were found in samples digested in nitric acid only compared to samples digested in nitric/perchloric acid. Titanium was included to indicate ff the plant samples were contaminated by soil. A survey of rice shoot samples indicated that Zn, S, and possibly P and B, as well as nitrogen, may be limiting the yields of rice crops in southern Australia.
