Thyroiditis and Gonadal Dysgenesis

Abstract
THE high incidence of Hashimoto's thyroiditis in females as compared to males has been repeatedly confirmed since the original description of the disease in 19121 in 4 patients, all middle-aged women. The female proponderance is also true for the occurrence of thyroid antibody in several control series,2 , 3 and for the incidence of focal thyroiditis in histologic studies by Bastenie4 and Williams and Doniach.5 Because of this, the occurrence of thyroiditis in a patient with primary gonadal failure described by Engel and Forbes6 was of particular interest, and prompted a clinical survey of a group of 25 cases of gonadal dysgenesis . . .
