Systemic lupus erythematosus in childhood presenting as hyperlipoproteinemia

Abstract
A child was found to have systemic lupus erythematosus [SLE] 2 1/2 yr after presenting with hyperlipoproteinemia. It seems indicated to look routinely for evidence of SLE in patients presenting with unexplained hyperlipoproteinemia, especially when parents and first degree relatives have normal lipids. Conversely, it would also seem wise to screen routinely for elevated lipids in patients with active SLE to determine the incidence of this problem.
