Abstract:
Predating the consolidation of the Pax Augusta as a linchpin of the Principate’s new imperial ideology, the benefits of progressively longer interludes of peace— both for Rome and its provincial subjects in varying degrees— ultimately legitimised its territorial expansion. This paper places the accent on the initial stages of that process. With the overseas expansion of mid-Republican Rome, peace, along with war, gradually became a central aspect of its incipient empire-building ideology.

Abstract:
As Nazi persecution of Jews intensified in the 1930s and 40s, many Jewish Germans sought to save their lives through emigration from continental Europe. Their journeys are meticulously documented in hundreds of diaries written by a broad spectrum of society. This article argues that the practice of diary writing had an important function in survival, as the diary helped refugees gain a sense of agency as survivornarrators of their stories of escape. Reading these sources enables us to see how Jews reacted to the brutal violence of antisemitism, and how they sought to make sense of the incredible loss that came with emigration. By surveying diaries of refugees who came to the United States, this essay explores how diarists shape their writing “ I” as they bear witness to stories of displacement. Furthermore, I argue that the material diary represents a site of writing home, as diarists cope with the loss of family, friends, and a sense of belonging.

Abstract:
This article analyses several World War I Diaries written by soldiers on the Front. Starting with the circumstances of publication and their effects on the text, the article addresses the passage of these very private texts into public life, before turning to the role played by the diaries for the soldiers who write them. Studies of the diary as a genre are used to show how war diaries fit into the more general genre. Finally the article turns to the reception of these works, by studying what part literary distance may play for the soldiers keeping a diary, and by arguing that the task of making sense of these texts has been transferred to present-day readers.

Abstract:

Abstract:
Jacques Pirenne is a major figure with regard to the political commitment of Belgian historians during the interwar period. The second son of the famous historian Henri Pirenne was himself an historian and a fervent defender of the unity of the nation and bilingualism in Flanders. He does not hesitate to engage with pressure groups and political parties. He uses the past as well as his various networks to defend his political project. So far, the political commitment of historians remains a neglected topic in the history of intellectuals in Belgium. In order to fill this historiographical gap, this article aims to reflect on this subject by focusing on the case of Jacques Pirenne, This study explores the influence of Pirenne’s networks on his political commitment. This contribution further explores how Pirenne made use of the past in order to serve a political project as well as the methods he used to defend Belgian unity and bilingualism in Flanders.

Abstract:

Abstract:
This article explores the possible continuum between the copular construction and the passive construction in the case of the Dutch verb raken. Since this continuum is already well established for the pattern [ zijn (‘ to be’) + past participle], it is legitimate to examine whether raken, which is also highly compatible with participles, can be used as a passive semi-auxiliary, next to its use as semi-copula. It will be shown that, despite some passive characteristics, the pattern [raken + past participle] is always an instantiation of the copular construction.
