BerEP4 positivity in Merkel cell carcinoma: a potential diagnosis pitfall

Abstract
Merkel cell carcinoma (MCC) is a primary neuroendocrine carcinoma of the skin with a 5‐year overall survival estimated at 40%1. In 2008, Merkel cell Polyomavirus (MCPyV) integration was identified as the primary oncogenic event of about 80% of MCC cases. Under microscopic examination, MCC appears as a proliferation of basaloid tumor cells invading the dermis and subcutaneous tissues.
