Abstract:
Anemia remains a global health problem in the 21stcentury. Iron deficiency anemia is the most common type. Childrenare especially vulnerable to the detrimental health consequences of anemia including fatigability, predisposition to repeated infections, and cognitive impairment. Iron deficiency anemia is considered the most prevalent type of nutritional anemia. Insufficient dietary iron intake, decreased iron absorption, and excess iron loss can cause iron deficiency.Accordingly, malnutrition plays a role in the prevalence of iron deficiency anemia. Saudi Arabia is now in advanced nutrition transition, which means the rates of obesity are high together with malnutrition. In this review, we shed light on the prevalence of iron deficiency anemia among the pediatric population of the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia. We also focus on the burden of malnutrition and its association with anemia, and evaluate the strategies needed to combat these health problems. Further research all over the Kingdom is needed to expose the full magnitude of anemia. Monitoring of the implementation of the previously existing health programs is needed. Abstract:
Lupus erythematosus is a nonorgan-specific autoimmune disease predominantly affecting young women of childbearing age, as well as neonatal lupus is a complication related to the presence of anti-SSA/Ro or anti-SSb/La antibodies in the mother. Cardiac manifestations of neonatal lupus include anti-SSA/Ro-SSB/La-mediated conduction system disease and endocardial/myocardial damage resulting in cardiomyopathy. Pregnancy is a complicating factor in lupus erythematosus in 60% of cases. These complications do not seem to be related to the number of pregnancies or to the duration of remission, but stopping the hydroxychloroquine treatment could be the cause of relapses. Obstetrical complications due to lupus are dominated by intrauterine growth retardation and prematurity in 30% of cases, abortion or fetal death in utero in 20% of cases, especially in the presence of anti-phospholipid antibodies and/or anti-cardiolipin antibodies in the mother, and complete atrioventricular block in 1.6% of cases due to trans-placental passage of anti-SSA antibodies. Some treatments, including hydroxychloroquine, corticosteroids, and certain immunosuppressants (azathioprine) are safe, and can and should be maintained if necessary during pregnancy. Abstract:
Pyogenic granuloma, also called lobular capillary hemangioma, is a non-neoplastic, vascular reactive lesion of the skin and mucous membranes. While the majority of the oral pyogenic granuloma involve the gingiva, they also rarely present at other sites including lips, buccal mucosa, palate, and tongue. The most common treatment of pyogenic granuloma is surgical excision but alternative modern approaches such as laser excision have also been proposed which results in bloodless, painless and suture free procedure. Herein, we present a case of pyogenic granuloma on tongue which was excised successfully with diode laser as a conservative and non-stressful method. The use of laser as modern medicine offers a new tool for treatment of oral lesions as comfortable as possible in all patients. Abstract:
Aim: Closed treatment of distal radius fractures is still a controversy. In children, circumferential casting of acute distal radius fractures is found to be safe. However, research is lacking to demonstrate its safety in adults. The purpose of this study was to assess the risk of complications associated with casting acute distal radius fractures in adult patients. Methods: Study is conducted in 60 patients with a distal radius fracture arriving at the Emergency department in Govt Theni Medical College. Patients were evaluated in the red zone and were provisionally immobilized with plaster of Paris casts. Patients were followed for a minimum of 12 weeks. Complication rates associated with casting were recorded, including rates of fracture displacement, tenosynovitis, carpal tunnel syndrome and malunion. Results: 60 patients were included in this study. A total of 45 patients met inclusion criteria for placement of a short arm cast in the Emergency Department. The majority of patients sustained their injuries from a ground level fall. A minority of patients had radiographic evidence of intra-articular extension or underwent a reduction prior to casting. The majority of patients did not require a cast change. The data analysis showed the complications such as fracture displacement, tenosynovitis, carpal tunnel syndrome malunion were of insignificant value and closed reduction proved to the safest and benefitted method of management in distal radius fractures with lesser complications. Conclusion: There were no major complications associated with casting of acute, distal radius fractures in this series of 45 adult patients. While further studies with larger numbers of patients are necessary to establish safety of casting, this study suggests that casting may be a safe and effective treatment for distal radius fractures in adult patients presenting with a normal neurovascular exam. Abstract:
Ophiorrhiza mungos L, is an Ayurvedic herb ,belonging to the family Rubiaceae, commonly known asMongoose plant is an ethnobotanically important plant containing Camptothecin as a potent natural bioactive compound. The genus Ophiorrhiza is known to be a natural source of Camptothecin and diverse biological activities. Camptothecin (CPT), a cytotoxic quinoline indole alkaloid is an important source for the synthesis of some of the major anti-cancer agents such as irinotecan and topotecan. O.mungos is a plant which yields contain Camptothecin in a significantly high amount. The plant is gaining recognition due to its diversified medicinal value however it has been categorized as an endangered plant. Alternative method of propagation like tissue culture, cell suspension culture, root culture, seedling culture etc aims at large scale production of the plant. Scientific literature regarding the Ophiorrhiza plants revealed their wide distribution across Asia and the neighbouring countries, where they were utilised as traditional medicine to treat various diseases. Several secondary metabolites like alkaloids, flavonoids, steroids, terpenoids, and fatty acids etc, exhibiting anti- bacterial, anti-viral, anti-ulcer, anti-helminthic and anti-venom properties are extracted from various parts of the plant. Here we aim to provide an overview of the importance of Ophiorrhiza mungos , a member of genus Ophiorrhiza its botanical properties, phytochemical and pharmaceutical aspects with interest on camptothecin and its future prospects. The review is an attempt to provide insights in our gap of knowledge that needs concern and bridge the gaps between its bioactive compound, traditional uses and pharmacological activities in an approach to provide long term benefits to society.
