Critical reading is a hot issue nowadays. Students in all levels, especially in tertiary education are pursuing the need of critical reading especially in English reading test. However, it is not an easy job for the students when they are asked to complete the reading task focusing on critical reading. Many students get confused, trapped in the distractor or even get frustrated when they cannot answer the questions. Collaborative strategic reading is one of the strategy in teaching reading which is hypothesized to be able to help the students in answering questions in critical reading tests. This research used quasi-experimental design with quantitative approach. To collect the data, the researcher used research instrument in form of test. The result of the study revealed that the significant value is 0.000 which was smaller than the significant level (0.050). It could be concluded that using collaborative strategic reading (CSR) strategy was effective to increase the students’ critical reading achievement at English education department at IAIN Tulungagung. It is suggested that collaborative strategic reading (CSR) strategy can be used as alternative strategy for English teachers in teaching and learning critical reading text.

Since higher order thinking skills have been targeted as one of the instructional objectives at Indonesian schools, investigating to what extent the pre-service English teachers are familiar with the concept of the higher order thinking skills in ELT is necessary. The current study was conducted to investigate to what extent the pre-service English teachers are familiar with the concept of higher order thinking skills in English language teaching. A survey research was employed which encompass 109 respondents. The finding of the current study reveals that the familiarity of the pre-service English teachers with the concepts of the higher order thinking skills in ELT is at the moderate level. It indicates that most pre-service English teachers are quite familiar with the concept of the higher order thinking skills but their knowledge is not deep. The implication to the teaching of English language may be that the teaching of the higher order thinking skills are not fully infused to the English language teaching. Therefore, future researchers are recommended to investigate the English teachers’ practice dealing with the promotion of the higher order thinking skills.

Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk mendeskripsikan bentuk kebahasaan pada pidato mahasiswa yang memerankan diri sebagai camat terpilih Kabupaten Sukoharjo. Metode penelitian yang digunakan adalah deskriptif kualitatif. Data dalam penelitian ini berupa kata, frasa, klausa, dan kalimat dalam pidato mahasiswa yang memerankan diri sebagai camat terpilih Kabupaten Sukoharjo. Sumber data penelitian berupa rekaman pidato mahasiswa. Teknik pengumpulan data menggunakan teknik rekam, teknik simak dan catat. Teknik analisis data dengan model interkatif, sedangkan teknik keabsahan data dengan validasi teori dan sumber. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa dalam pidato meliputi lima bidang, 1) Bidang Fonologi yang meliputi (a) 8 bentuk kesalahan pengucapan bunyi dan 1 bentuk akronim 2) Bidang Morfologi meliputi (a) 1 bentuk alomorf, (b) 3 proses afiksasi berupa prefiks, konfiks, dan sufiks, (c) 1 bentuk ulang atau reduplikasi, dan (d) 1 bentuk suplisi. 3) Bidang Sintaksis meliputi (a) 2 pleonasme, (b) 4 kata mubadzir, (c) 1 kalimat tidak efektif, (d) 1 kalimat ambigu. 4) Bidang Pragmatik meliputi (a) 1 tindak tutur ekspresif dan (b) 1 tindak tutur direktif. 5) Bidang Sosiolinguistik meliputi (a) 3 bentuk alih kode, (b) 2 bentuk campur kode, dan (c) 1 bentuk ragam bahasa tidak formal.

The paper investigated common grammatical errors produced by Indonesian university students of English as a foreign language when writing their undergraduate research proposals. Accordingly, an urgent research question to resolve was what common grammatical errors are made by the seventh semester students of the English Language Education Study Program of Sanata Dharma University in writing Chapter One of their research proposals? To answer the research question, the researchers conducted a content analysis. The researchers analysed students’ research proposals, focusing on grammatical issues identified in the first chapter. Results showed that the errors were omission (content and grammatical morpheme), addition (double marking, regularization, and simple addition), misinformation (regularization errors, archi-forms, and alternating forms), misordering, parallelism and diction. The top three errors were successively omission (38.15 per cent), addition (21.97 per cent) and parallelism (18.5 per cent).

High-Order Thinking skills have been a trend in recent years. Researchers studied on aspects of HOTS. Some studied on how to teach it to students while some are on how to assess it. However, the implementation of HOTS is strongly affected by the teacher’s beliefs –including knowledge, beliefs, and practices (Borg, 2001). The present study analyzes the teacher’s beliefs on HOTS-based assessment. It uses narrative inquiry as the research method. The data are gotten from the participant’s interview and document analysis –test items constructed by the participant. The data are then analyzed using short story analysis. The results show that the participants occupied the knowledge of HOTS-based assessment mainly through independent study. She believes that HOTS-based assessment can be applied in High School level. Furthermore, it gives benefits for the students. She practices HOTS-based assessment in her class by constructing HOTS items. However, some English teachers have not implemented it in their class.

Together with the development of technology and knowledge in English Language Teaching, teaching model develops variously. There is no single model of teaching meets all the students’ needs, especially in Islamic higher education institution. Content-Based Instruction (CBI) offers a teaching model which integrates the teaching of subject matters and language skills in a class. The findings of the present research reveal the benefits of the implementation of CBI cover cognitive and affective aspect. The knowledge of the Islamic contents and foreign languages increases and the behavior gets better. However, the more substantial finding is that the implementation of CBI eases the burden of the lecturers in doing two main tasks, namely, teaching (internalizing) Islamic values and teaching language skills.

The characters in a drama sometimes say implicitly so that what are said are different from what are meant. This study investigates conversational implicature in a drama script entitled “Sherlock Holmes and the Mystery of the Aquilla” by Sid River. The aim of the study was to find out what conversational maxims flouted to generate conversational implicature in the Sid River’s drama script entitled “Sherlock Holmes and the Mystery of the Aquilla” were. The research design employed in this study was a descriptive qualitative research using Grice’s theory. The results of the study showed that from 35 excerpts, 11 excerpts belonged to observing the maxims, and the other 24 excerpts belonged to non-observance of the maxims, especially flouting the maxims. The number of flouting the maxims of Quantity, Quality, Relation, and Manner respectively were 6, 20, 3, 3. Based on the analysis, it can be concluded that the conversational maxims flouted in this drama script are maxims of Quantity, Quality, Relation, and Manner. Moreover, flouting the maxim of Quality mostly occurs while the least occurance is flouting the maxims of Relation and Manner. In other words, the characters in this drama script often say untruthful utterances.

This study was aimed to investigate students learning style of the second semester students of English Department of IAIN Batusangkar in 2017/2018 academic year. The design of this research was descriptive quantitative. In collecting the data, the researcher used questionnaires which was constructed according to the indicators gotten from the theories. Meanwhile, to see the validity and reliability of the questionnaire, it was tried out to some selected respondents. In analysing the data, the researcher used SPSS 21 for descriptive analysis. Based on the data analysis, it was found two students tend to have visual learning style or 3,5%. Meanwhile, 39 students have auditory learning style 68,42% and 16 students have a tendency kinesthetic learning style 28,7%. It is also can be seen that most of students, 68,42%, have auditory learning style as the dominant learning style.

This study aims to analyze the meaning of Ustaz Hanan Attaki›s da›wah in semantic studies. This research uses descriptive qualitative method which means the results of the research are not in the form of numbers but rather the results of the description of words. The data source is in the form of Ustaz Hanan Attaki lecture document. In this study the data collected was in the form of a video lecture by Ustaz Hanan Attaki. The technique used in this study was the technique of referring and recording data through transcripts of writing from the results of listening and observing video lecture shows. The results of the study show that there are (a) seven words which include high connotation, such as shade, fragrant, kara, theory, hobbies, perfume; and (b) five words which include the form of friendly connotation meaning, such as the word chasing, understanding, giving, girl, and mature.
