Abstract:
Since the last two decades, charity movements have been flourishing in Indonesian Islamic landscape. These organisations are involving not only state sponsored organizations, but also non-government associations and professional industries. This article exclusively discusses the youth-based charity movements in two important Islamic universities in Indonesia and tries to offer a new glance of youth charity movement as to which their movement relates to the issue of identity and social welfare. The article uses a qualitative method through a systematic literature review, in-depth interview, and observation to the activities of two youth-based charity movements at two state Islamic universities in Jambi and Surabaya. This paper further argues that the spirit of philanthropic movement does not only depend on economic wealth, but also on social solidarity, Islamic principle of economic distribution, and networks among the students that have been successfully translated into both social welfare activism and humanitarian activities.

Abstract:
In his seminal Islam Observed: Religious Developments in Morocco and Indonesia from 1968, the American anthropologist Clifford Geertz (1926-2006) placed the comparative study of Muslim societies on the research agenda. In view of my knowledge on the history of Islam in Indonesia, it stroke me that the political dimension of religion did not take an important place in the book. This is the more remarkable because during Geertz’s fieldwork in Java in 1953-4 manifestations of political Islam regularly popped up, and Geertz did not only notice those, but also recorded them in his book The Religion of Java from 1960. In this paper I will go into the question of why Geertz did not give a more prominent place to political Islam in his analysis of Muslim cultures, and what concepts of both Islam and religion he used.

Abstract:
Throughout Islamic history, we observe enmity and conflicts between Sunnism and Shiism, nonetheless there has been also reconciliation between these sects. This article examines the opportunities and challenges of Sunni-Shia convergence in Indonesia. Such a picture will reveal a better understanding of the features of Sunni-Shia convergence in the country and their relationship with the notion of ‘Indonesian Islam’. The hostility between Shiism and Sunnism in Indonesia is triggered by misunderstandings between these sects, politicisation of Shiism, as well as geopolitical tensions in the Middle East. These constitute the challenges of Sunni-Shia convergence. One may also observe the ventures of Sunni-Shia convergence which have been undertaken by the scholars of the Nahdlatul Ulama (NU) and Muhammadiyah, and other Islamic civil society organisations. Grounding on these enterprises and the enduring elaboration of ‘Indonesian Islam’, the opportunities of and the prospects for Sunni-Shia rapprochement in the country are envisaged.

Abstract:
The curriculum is the most important element in the educational process. The curriculum is constantly changing in order to find the perfect formula to improve the quality of education. The change is not only caused by the development of science and technology, but social aspects or even a disaster can also be the factors for changing curriculum. Such as non-natural disasters, which have attacked Indonesia since March 2020, namely the COVID-19 Pandemic. The pandemic demands that education managers in each institution to innovate in compiling a curriculum that can be implemented effectively and efficiently. Such as the child-friendly curriculum implemented in MI Barokah At-Tahdzib. The study aims to explain the implementation of the child-friendly curriculum at MI Barokah At-Tahdzib during the Covid 19 Pandemic. The method used is a qualitative method with interactive model data analysis techniques. The results of this study indicate that the child-friendly curriculum is implemented by 1) implementing offline learning while still paying attention to health protocols 2) Creating study groups consisting of a maximum of 12 children to reduce social and physical distance with a learning duration of 1.5-2 hours 3) Assessment Learning cognitive and psychomotor aspects carried out in a network via Whatsapp and google form, the cost of sending affective aspects is carried out by observation techniques when face-to-face group learning

Abstract:
The social-relational lives of girls and boys often experience various problems of gender injustice, which are manifested in the form of gender stereotyping. This paper aims to analyze aspects of gender stereotyping and their implications for social resilience in children in the context of relations between girls and boys and their environment. The data collection relies on the literature study and interviews with one expert who is an lecturer as well as a child rights activist. This paper explains that gender stereotype has been done since childhood, even before the child is born. The stereotype is perpetuated through various socializations: through families, schools, and the general public environment. Gender stereotype has an impact on children's social resilience, particularly how children react in society. The difference of perceptions in children with society expectations makes them feel confused and uncomfortable with themself.

Abstract:
This paper discusses various factors behind the ethnic Tamil women who decided to join the terrorist militia group, Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE), in the northern and southeastern parts of Sri Lanka. In this discussion it is known that there are three factors that affect the decision of Tamil women to join the LTTE, namely: first, the existence of the Tamil community as an ethnic minority. Second, the occurrence of mass sexual violence and abuse among Tamil women, perpetuated by the Sri Lanka’s majority ethnic group. Finally, the decision of Tamil women to join LTTE is due to the pressure that structurally and culturally appears in communities in conflictual areas. Through these three factors, Tamil women then chose to leave their comfort zone and reconstructed their identity by joining the LTTE terrorist militia group. In this case, the involvement of female LTTE combatants in Sri Lanka is not only an attempt to eradicate negative views regarding femininity through military activities, but also a symbol of successful self-liberalization from the practice of gender oppression in conflict situations

Abstract:

Abstract:

This study aims to describe the findings related to the affective aspects of the novel “Muhammad: Lelaki Penggenggam Hujan” by Tasaro GK. This is motivated by the facts which show that learning of Islamic History and Culture is still mostly done based on cognitive aspects alone. This is certainly not in line with the characteristics of these learning which not only include the development of the cognitive aspects of students, but also demands empowerment in the affective and psychomotor aspects. So that one alternative problem solving that can be offered is to use novels as a source of affective learning. The discussion in this study was carried out with a content analysis consisting of four steps; data procurement, data reduction, data analysis, and inference. The results of data analysis show that there are various forms of simulations on the level of affective aspects in the novel “Muhammad: Lelaki Penggenggam Hujan”.

Abstract:

Abstract:
One of the objectives of mathematics learning is to improve the mathematical connection abilities on students. However, our observations showed that the mathematical connection abilities on students at MTs Pancasila, Bengkulu was still poor. This encourages the need for a learning strategy which is able to direct students to connect with what they have learned into everyday lives. Therefore, this study aimed to examine students’ ability in understanding mathematical concepts to solve problems related to cubes and rectangular prism topic. This was qualitative study with the REACT strategy. Cubes and rectangular prism was one of the mathematics topics of the basic competencies which have to be mastered by students in grade VIII. The subjects were 20 students who took the test and seven students who were randomly selected to be interviewed. Data collection included test of understanding the concept in essay form which was previously validated. Based on the results of students’ answers, 20 students have been able to connect between mathematics problems with the learned mathematics topic, the density topic in physics with the volume cube topic, and the question problems with everyday issues. However, it was also found that some students answered the questions with different procedures.

Abstract:
The poor problem solving abilities of students is still a scourge in mathematics learning, mainly in terms of solving mathematical story problems. This is because in the case of story problems, students are required to understand the information and the questions in mathematical problems at the beginning in order to create a mathematical model which reflects the problem being solved. This study aimed to examine the achievement and improvement of students’ abilities in solving mathematical story problems about arithmetic sequences and series using LAPS-Heuristic learning model. The study method was the Intact-Group Comparison. The subjects were 43 students who were divided into two groups. The first group received conventional learning, while the other group received LAPS-Heuristic learning. The results showed that both achievement and improvement of students’ abilities in solving mathematical story problems who received LAPS-Heuristic learning model were better than in students’ abilities who received conventional learning.

Abstract:
Mathematical communication skill is very important for university students because through communication, students can convey their mathematical ideas, knowledge and arguments. However, the facts show that the written mathematical communication skills of students majoring in Mathematics Education at IAIN Tulungagung are classified as low. The low written mathematical communication skill of students is indicated by errors in writing mathematical symbols on an equation and unsystematic writing of the steps to solve mathematical problems. This study aimed to determine the effectiveness of the Think Pair Share (TPS) learning model using Google Classroom media to improve the written mathematical communication skill of IAIN Tulungagung students. Several previous researchers have reviewed the use of Google Classroom in learning, but it was not integrated with the TPS learning model and did not focus on the influence on students' mathematical communication skill. The study sample was 40 students of the 5th semester in 2019/2020 academic year majoring in Mathematics Education at IAIN Tulungagung who took the Differential Equation course. The data collection was carried out by providing a pretest and posttest before and after implementing the learning using the TPS model with Google Classroom media. Then, the data from the pretest and posttest results were analyzed using the Wilcoxon test because the data were not normally distributed. The results of this study showed that the TPS learning model using Google Classroom media could improve the students' mathematical communication skill.

Abstract:
The development of technology in the age of the fourth industrial revolution affects almost every aspect of human lives, including education sector. Therefore, learning innovations are needed in order to meet learning objectives. The objectives are coaching people who are competitive and have 4C skills (communication, collaboration, critical thinking and problem solving, creativity and innovation). One of the learning innovations in mathematics is the application of concrete and digital learning media. To explore and summarize the latest facts related to the concrete and digital mathematics learning media during industry 4.0, the authors of this study conducted a research using Systematic Literature Review method. A total of 30 literatures from various databases were interpreted. A review was drawn on the uses, strengths, and weaknesses of digital and concrete mathematics learning media during industry 4.0. The concrete learning media has advantages which include improving students’ problem solving, creative thinking, and visual thinking skills, but it requires more attention and care. Meanwhile, the advantages of digital learning media include increasing the effectiveness and efficiency of learning mathematics, supporting distance learning, and not requiring special maintenance. Nevertheless, there are still students and teachers who are not familiar with technology, some students do not have gadgets, and there are also inadequate internet networks in some areas.

Abstract:
This literature review aimed to describe the opportunities and challenges of integrating the Learning Management System (LMS) in mathematics learning, especially in terms of the non-technical aspects. Because many LMS platforms which can be integrated into learning process, this review only discusses the three LMS platforms which are common, namely Moodle, Edmodo, and Schoology. This review was conducted with the method as proposed by Templier and Paré (2015), in which the literature materials consisted of journal articles, proceedings, and official websites of LMS. The results of this review showed that integrating the LMS in mathematics learning indicated opportunities in terms of the positive impact which can be obtained from integrating the LMS. On the other hand, the identified challenges were about how mathematics content or materials were organized through integrating the LMS, providing feedback, and maximizing the online discussion facility provided by LMS. Therefore, to obtain the positive impact from integrating the LMS into mathematics learning, teachers should pay attention to these three challenges.

Abstract:
The old-centuries medical forms claimed to have been exemplified by the Prophet Muhammad, called Prophet’s medicine, have been reinvented by the contemporary Indonesian Salafis. This invention is parts of their attempts to return all aspects of life to the authoritative resources. In doing so, the Salafis use modern packaging to attract non-Salafi Muslims. As a result, Prophet’s medicine has been popular among certain Muslim groups. The presence of Prophet’s medicine, to some extent, challenges conventional medicine which is hardly affordable by the average people. This is made possible by an open political climate which occurs in Indonesia over the last two decades. It eventually leads to the diversity of medicinal knowledge in the country.

Abstract:
This article examines the rise of Islamic populism in post-truth Indonesia. It particularly discusses the proliferation of Islamic populism narratives in social media that lead to hoaxes and hate speeches which appeared in series of political elections. This article argues that there has been a similar pattern of Indonesian form of populism to that of other parts of western countries, particularly the US and the UK. Like populism in the latter two countries, the issue of “indigeneity” has generated the reproduction of post-truth narrates, ranging from false-news, hoaxes, and hate-speeches, blaiming the so-called “foreign” elements of the country. Islamist mobilisation is central to explain the proliferation of post-truth politics which cultivates tensions and divisions among society and reserves as a threat to democratic consolidation in contemporary Indonesia.

Abstract:
This article discusses the world’s most oppressed people, the Muslim Rohingya of Burma (Myanmar) through the lens of “state symbologies and critical juncture”. It further argues the amalgamation of Burmese-Buddhist ethno-nationalism and anti-Muslim hate speech have become elements of Burma’s state symbology and components. Colonialism established conditions in which ethno-religious conflict could develop through policies that destroyed the civic religious pluralism characteristic of pre-colonial states. Burmese Buddhist ethno-religious nationalism is responsible for a series of communal conflicts and state repression because it did not recognize Muslims and other minorities as full and equal participants in the post-colonial national project. Therefore, the cycles of violence and the complexities of inter-ethnic and inter-religious relations indicate that Burmese political culture has become increasingly violent and genocidal.

Abstract:
Nawawī of Banten (1813–1897) and Haji Hasan Mustapa (1852–1930) are two important figures of Malay-Indonesian Muslim scholars (‘ulamā’) who have been widely studied. However, personal proximity of these two ‘ulamā’ seems to escape from scholarly discussion. Seen from the light of scholarly commenting (sharh) tradition, this study on the other hand attempts to show their personal proximity between the senior teacher and young student when they lived in Mecca in the late nineteenth century. The sharh tradition of these two ‘ulamā’ particularly through appear in Nawawī’s al-’Iqd al-Thamīn that aims to comment on Mustapa’s work, Al-Fath al-Mubīn, and Mustapa’s al-Lum’a al-Nūrāniyya, a response to Nawawī’s al-Shadra al-Jummāniyya. These two Arabic books (s. kitab; p. kutub) were published in Cairo, Egypt. This article further argues that the sharh tradition situates authority and reputation as the epicenter of scholarly discussion between the two ‘ulamā’ who were influential among the Jawah community. It also argues that these two Sundanese scholars contributed significantly in the transmission of Islamic learning in the early twentieth century Middle East. Their works show a scholarly reputation which delivers insights on exceptionality of Islamic and Malay archipelagic issues and serve as a global contribution of Malay-Indonesian ‘ulamā’ to the triumph of Islamic learning traditions.

Abstract:
In its early periods, pesantren as a type of Islamic educational institution focused merely on religious teachings. Socio-political pressures and the need to carry out Islamic outreach have pushed kiai as pesantren leaders to negotiate their idealism according to the circumstances in different historical periods. Historical accounts from the Dutch colonial period to Indonesian independence show that kiai leadership becomes the decisive factor as well as the legitimation for pesantren to take certain actions during precarious situations. To examine the institutional development of pesantren in the post-reformation era, a recent ethnographic fieldwork has been carried out in three pesantren in Madura, Java, and Lombok. This paper discusses the development and transformation of pesantren as an institution from the Dutch Ethical Policy Period until today. It demonstrates pesantren’s involvement in anti-Western campaigns and trials of affiliation with oppositions in the colonial period. This paper shows how Islamic virtues remain the heart of pesantren education and examines how innovation in contemporary pesantren regarding pedagogies and values translated in seemingly non-religious areas is substantially based on religious values.

Abstract:
In various cultural and religious contexts, from West Asia to Southeast Asia, we come across a number of quite similar creation myths in which a peacock, seated on a cosmic tree, plays a central part. For the Yezidis, a sect of Sufi origins that has moved away from Islam, the Peacock Angel, who is the most glorious of the angels, is the master of the created world. This belief may be related to early Muslim cosmologies involving the Muhammadan Light (Nur Muhammad), which in some narratives had the shape of a peacock and participated in creation. In a different set of myths, the peacock and the Tree of Certainty (shajarat al-yaqīn) play a role in Adam and Eve’s fall and expulsion from Paradise. The central myth of the South Indian Hindu cult of the god Murugan also involves a tree and a peacock. The myth is enacted in the annual ritual of Thaipusam, like the Nur Muhammad myth is still enacted annually in the Maulid festival of Cikoang in South Sulawesi. Images of the peacock, originating from South India, have moved across cultural and religious boundaries and have been adopted as representing the different communities’ peacock myths.

Abstract:
This article examines dynamics of Islamic discourses in Post-New Order Indonesia, focusing on the birth of Jaringan Islam Liberal/JIL (Islamic Liberalism Network). The network which emerged in 2001 was a result of informal meeting and group discussions of young intellectuals at Jl. Utan Kayu 68 H, East Jakarta who later agreed to establish the JIL. Since its earliest foundation, the networks has been at the forefront to attack Islamic extremist and fundamentalist groups while calling for Islamic liberalism. This article tries to portray the emergence of the JIL and its liberalism agenda and offers the contestation on Islamic liberalism in Indonesia. As for the latter, it not only encapsulates responses of fundamentalist groups, but also important Muslim organisation, like the traditionalist Nahdlatul Ulama/NU and the Modernist Muhammadiyah, and important Indonesian Muslim thinkers. This article further argues that Islamic liberalism that takes its root to Muslim activism during the New Order Indonesia has shaken the basic foundation of a religion as introducing liberalism in Islamic discourses. It has invited contestation and responses for a significant Muslim group, including the two-most important Indonesian Muslim organisations, the NU and the Muhammadiyah. As this article further demonstrates, the contestation is mainly because of different opinions among Muslims on the limit of reason to understand religion.

This article examines the shift in gender relations in the context of the families of Indonesian Migrant Workers (PMI). By taking an object in Rejotangan District as the most PMI area in Tulungagung Regency, this article uses a symbolic approach to attempts to portray the process of interaction between individuals in the context of PMI families. In this case, the concept of patriarchy is no longer valid. The husband begins to play a role in the domestic sector; cooking, taking care of children and doing everything about the household. While the wife, only has a role to fulfill the family’s living, whether as a housemaid, taking care of elderly parents, or in other sectors abroad. Such matter does not only have implications for material-economic factors but also psychologically and sociologically; there is a complexity of family problems whose impact can lead to the destruction of household relations and the education of their children.

Abstract:
Abstract:
