Many of the texts Shakespeare drew upon when writing The Tempest have been identified beyond dispute. There is, though, a possible source that has been overlooked: the great collection of Plutarch’s essays known as the Moralia. In this we find a tale that links the Ancient world with the Americas, describes an island of magic far out in the Atlantic and touches upon a continent beyond.
