ExtractSiavash Rokni This chapter traces the rise of rock music as a scene in Iran from the early 1990s until the first decade of the twenty-first century. I look at two generations of rock musicians. The first consists of musicians that were active during the 1990s and early 2000s. This includes a look at the rise of music produced by those who saw the revolution in their childhood. The second period covers the timeline typical of most articles written about rock music in Iran. This is the period of the presidency of Mohammad Khatami (1997–2005) and the cultural thaw that followed it. Here, there will be a focus on two main rock music scenes that developed in this period of time, namely Tehran and Mashhad.
