Perspective on Traditional Herbal Medicine – Ashwagandha

Abstract: Herbal medicines comprise of herbs, its materials, preparations, and finished products, that contains main constituents which are parts of plants, plant materials, their combinations. In Ayurveda's medical armamentarium, Ashwagandha remains renowned for improving health and well-being, and has proved to be beneficial in the treatment of many ailments. Ashwagandha (Withania somnifera) [L. Dunal, Family: Solanaceae] is one of the leading and appreciated therapeutic plant of the Indian Ayurvedic medicine system. Ashwagandha is also called as poisonous gooseberry, winter cherry, and Indian ginseng. Inclination to develop new products with Ashwagandha bioactive molecules continues. Ashwagandha is a potential medicinal plant that can produce international business in India. Scientific studies on this plant need to be expanded with more immediate comparisons in order to effectively limit patent technology based on this plant and to utilize a few of its therapeutic uses at the highest level.
