Atrial switch (Senning procedure) in the era of the arterial switch operation: A case report

Abstract
Introduction: Prolonged survival of palliated children with D-transposition of great arteries and intact ventricular septum in the era of arterial switch operation is exceptionally rare. Aims: We present the case of a 280 days old male from Iraq with D-TGA and IVS. The patient underwent late palliation 18 days after birth in India (balloon atrial septostomy). He developed postinterventional sepsis with DIC and was ventilated for 5 weeks. Due his critical illness and comorbidities the initial plan for anatomic correction (arterial switch operation) was abandoned. The patient came to us with severe cyanosis (SpO2 Conclusion: Our case demonstrates that the Senning operation can be safely performed in prolonged survival of D-TGA and IVS with important regression of LV mass in the presence of severe cyanosis.
