Abstract
A calculation is made of the effect of including the retarded potential term of quantum electrodynamics when evaluating the van der Waals interaction between two atoms. In disagreement with the conclusions of Casimir and Polder the interaction energy at large distances is found to vary as R-3 .Keywords
