Experimental Validation of Simulink-Based Internal Combustion Engine Modeling Framework

Abstract
A Simulink-based one-dimensional (1D) flow engine modeling framework has been developed. The framework allows quick assembly of engine component blocks in a physically representative manner in the Simulink environment, reducing model build time. In the previous series of papers, 1D gas dynamics modeling and quasi-dimensional combustion modeling were presented. In this article, the engine simulation framework is validated by forming an engine model and comparing simulation results with production engine data. A new method is proposed for fitting turbulence and burn rate parameters across the operating space of an engine. The proposed method reduces model tuning time by eliminating the intake and exhaust flow models when evaluating the fitness function. Using the proposed method, 12 combustion model parameters are optimally tuned to match the cylinder pressure. The result shows that the model can predict average peak cylinder pressure within 15% of the measured values for a majority of the test points with a maximum error of 27%.
