Abstract
N. K. Jemisin’s science fiction, The Fifth Season, describes the “End” in Yumenes and the female protagonist, Essun’s (Damaya or Syenite) pursuits of freedom. This thesis will explore the protagonist’s fluid identity in different periods of life in The Fifth Season by adopting postmodern approaches. The character’s identities are fluid according to her mobility to different places. Nevertheless, she is continually trying to construct her own “real” identity during different life stages and to pursue a sense of home.
