Dutch, 17th century, female. Born c. 1600 or 1610, in Haarlem; died 1660, in Haarlem. Draughtsman, painter (gouache). Genre scenes, flowers. The daughter of a Harlem brewer, Judith Leyster was already known as a painter in her own right by 1628, before she met Frans Hals in 1629. She became a member of the Harlem painters' guild in 1633 and in 1635 Willem Wouters was her student. She married the painter Jan Miense Molenaer on 1 June 1636 and went with him to Heemstedt.
