Dutch, 17th century, female. Born c. 1600 or 1610, in Haarlem; died 1660, in Haarlem. Draughtsman, painter (gouache). Genre scenes, flowers. The daughter of a Harlem brewer, Judith Leyster was already known as a painter in her own right by 1628, before she met Frans Hals in 1629. She became a member of the Harlem painters' guild in 1633 and in 1635 Willem Wouters was her student. She married the painter Jan Miense Molenaer on 1 June 1636 and went with him to Heemstedt. Her pictures are often sold as the work of Frans Hals, although her technique was lighter and more fluid than that of Hals....
