ExtractA literary journal is a labor of love, as they do not tend to make money. The value is there, no doubt about it: they influence literary agents and small publishers who are looking for the newest writers and artists, the exciting trends. Still, in general, when money comes into play the stoutest and most determined editors (student or professional) take pause. You have to pay the bills. And while a lot can be done with a little, much can be wasted as well. I’ve seen undergraduate literary magazines exist on less than a thousand dollars a year. (Not too long, though; if you keep that up you probably have other means of support that are not evident in the same way as cash. ) At the other end of the spectrum are magazines supported by massive endowments, like Poetry.
