(b Arena, Cedros, Trinidad, Aug 31, 1910; d London, Feb 9, 1999). Trinidadian guitarist and arranger. Self-taught, he played guitar professionally from the age of 17, as well as saxophone, banjo, and double bass. He traveled to Europe in 1938 via Guadeloupe and Martinique and worked first in Paris with Martiniquan musicians and Oscar Alemán, then in Brussels at le Boeuf sur le Toit with Ram Ramirez, Jean Omer, the saxophonist Harry Pohl, and the Jamaican trumpeter Joe Smith. He also worked in Antwerp with Gus Clark, the singer Tommy Brookins, and others.
