Abstract
In his sermon The Triall of Vanitie (c.1590), Henry Smith of St Clement Danes, London, offered that, ‘when Salomon beheld such a pluralitie, and Totquot of Vanities, like Surges coming one upon another in pleates and in foldes, he spake as though he would shewe us Vanity hatching vanities…’. 1 What was ‘Silver-tongued’ Smith really getting at in this small part of his lecture on vanitas vanitatum, in light of that strange word, ‘Totquot’?
