Abstract
Palladium(II) and cobalt(II) complexes of Schiff base derived from 4-aminobenzene sulfonamide (Sulfonamide drug) were prepared by convenient method. Reaction of sulfonamide with 2-hydroxy-1-naphthaldehyde gave the Schiff base compound 1 in good yield. Treatment of compound 1 with CoCl2.6H2O and PdCl2yielded new metal complexes 2 and 3, respectively. The synthesized compounds were screened for their antibacterial activity against Escherichia coli, Bacillus cereus, Salmonella spp. and Staphylococcus aureus. Additionally, the compounds were tested for antifungal activity against Aspergillus niger and Candida albicans. Some compounds exhibited good antibacterial and antifungal activity. Molecular modeling studies were performed and showed hydrogen binding and hydrophobic interactions. Keywords
