Abstract
Application software (apps) for modern smartphones is becoming increasingly popular. Small apps (such as calendars, calculators, games, etc.) had already been used in the first mobile telephones. However, with the introduction of Apple’s iPhones, Android phones and other smart phones, together with a huge marketing campaign for these devices, apps became known to many more people. Steve Jobs, co-founder and Chief Executive Officer of Apple Inc., introduced the details of his app concept in an interview with the New York Times in 2007.1 By 2010 there were approximately 500,000 apps available covering all areas of life, including medicine.
